| But what if they won't? I'm not sure this is something most people have much experience with, so please at least entertain the possibility even if you don't buy it. What if the clouds aren't going to pass? Suppose a case of depression that has persisted through every treatment in the book. Suppose a case of depression that has persisted for a lifetime, punctuated only with brief manic episodes (dangerously high highs) that invariably lead to a crash harder than the one before it. Suppose a case that nobody, including the doctors and the friends and the family, really has any hope for.
What then? When someone you love is severely depressed all the time, can't find a single moment of happiness, you want desperately to help. What do you do when you ask that person what you can do to help them and the answer is "tell me it's okay to die"? Obviously the last thing a person wants is for someone they love to die, but maybe it's not, maybe the last thing a person wants is for someone they love to live in absolute despair.
Do you say it's okay? Do you tell that person that yes, it's okay to die? When the only thing keeping their finger off the trigger is a sense of obligation, when you're the overwhelming majority of the target of that sense of obligation, do you say it's okay? Do you sacrifice having that person alive and in your life, if the tradeoff is that they're no longer miserable every waking moment for years on end? Or is that "permission" too much to bear?

| I really enjoyed Metropolis. I've never seen it before and was really impressed with the visual special effects added to enhance this film. This is especially impressive for a film made in the 1920's and I could see how this went over the original budget alloted for this film. Seeing the "Making of Metropolis" special feature beforehand was helpful in understanding the film as a whole and provided a clear explanation of how various special effects were accomplished.
The part of the film that interested me the most was the two Maria's. Having a Maria look-alike created from the so-called 'Machine Man' was an interesting way to introduce the doppelganger effect in early silent cinema. The idea of the doppelganger is seen in subsequent science fiction films and television series, but I found it interesting that Lang would introduce an idea like this one at that particular time. It also piqued my interest because it questioned the concept of identity in a post World War I world. We see a bunch of workers doing repetitive menial tasks and all dressed in the same clothing, yet they do not seem to have a specific purpose or identity. They just exist.
Yet, the machine-like Maria has a very different agenda than the human one and her orders propel Metropolis into chaos. We see a savior saint-like aspect to the human Maria, which is directly the opposite of the anamatronic Maria whose body becomes an object of sexual gratification and exoticism.
Overall, it is definitely more visually engaging than Aelita and the storyline is more interesting. At first, I remember being fooled into thinking that the real Maria was the one burning at the stake during the "burn the witch" scene and was relieved to discover that I was wrong. In my opinion, the film was perfect as it was and I don't think it was necessary to add or remove any parts from it. The narrative had compelling twists, engaging visual effects, effective dialogue and intriguing characters.
