The brunette is Stacy, she was a waitress in the previous season who tried to hit on Heidi's husband, Spencer, and they actually hang out a couple of nights in a kinda break between Speidi. People must have liked her cause she came back this season to be friend with Kristin!
Kristin is the superbitch and tooootally hates Lauren. In Laguna Beach she was dating Stephen Coletti, Lauren Conrad oldest & best friend, neighbour, and secretly the love of her life (then), and Stephen was crazy about Kristin. Kristin felt so threatened by LC's and Stephen's friendship and couldn't stand LC near Stephen cause Stephen loved (as friends) and adored LC. Finally when Stephen and Lauren left to the San Francisco university (together but not together) Kristin broke up with Stephen and blah blah blah...
Kristin stayed in Laguna a year more and (extra-show) went to LA to try to become an actress and started being in the parties scene, thinking she would eat the world. She started dating Brody Jenner (the guy in the left in the first pic) who is like Paris Hilton but less famous (he is Kim Kardassian stepbro) and was best friend with Spencer Pratt since kids.
Kristin knew Heidi because of Lauren, so she and Brody introduced them and they matched and started dating (or faking it, we don't know lol). But after Kristin and Brody broke up, Brody meet (thanks to Heidi) Lauren and she totally got his eye and they start an on/off relation. While Lauren was getting famous with the Hills, Kristin started to be forgotten so when Lauren said she was leaving, Kristin was added to the cast to, in her own words, make the show a success and show LC she (Kristin) is the queen of MTV. She is a bitch in some senses, but she has a very fierce personality. I think you would like her .... sometimes....
